The tomato has its origins in what is now Latin America. It has spread globally now and is a very, very common part of our lives: be it ketchup or curry or juice or as a flavor for rice. It is actually a fruit, belonging to the berry family. But, since it’s used in the way of a vegetable, it is also considered one.

The Brinjal, or as it’s globally and more widely known: the Eggplant is a cousin of the tomato. It is similar to the tomato in that it is botanically a fruit but is used as a vegetable.  It is of Asian origin. India is the second-largest producer of Brinjal in the world, next to China.

Cluster Beans (Guar)

It is a legume considered to be of African origin. It is primarily cultivated in Pakistan and India; both the countries combined account for 80% of the world's production. The cluster bean is a very important plant in a crop rotation cycle. It is used as a source to replenish the soil with essential fertilizers and nitrogen fixation, before the next crop

Ladies’ Finger

Ladies’ finger, also known as Okra or Okro, is a flowering plant of disputed origin. It is cultivated for its seed-pod which is edible. It is among the most heat- and drought-tolerant vegetable species in the world and can tolerate soils with heavy clay and intermittent moisture. Its stem has industrial uses.

Chilly or chilly pepper is a fruit. It belongs to the type of plant called Capsicum. It originated in America. But now its biggest producer, consumer, and exporter in the world are none other than our very own India. It is said that eating chilly can make our minds adapt to fear and pain.

It is a flowering plant-primarily cultivated in Africa and Asia. Some of its species and hybrids are cultivated for the sake of their use as ornamental plants. They are grown from seed. They are used in butterfly gardening in suitable climates. Also, Verbena has long been associated with divine and other supernatural forces.

It is a type of Sunflower plant of the daisy family. They are native primarily to North America. They are known for their long, single-stemmed flowers that come in a variety of bright colors. Zinnias are popular garden flowers due to their variety of colors and shapes. Also, they can withstand hot summer temperatures. They are easy to grow from seeds.

The plant gets its name because the flower looks like a rooster’s head.  The plant is used as an ornamental plant indoors. Its leaves and flowers can be used as vegetables. They are often grown as foods in India, Western Africa, and South America. They are brightly colored, red, yellow, pink, or orange.

The plant is called so, because of its round flower heads which, in combination with the ligules look like the sun. They are native to North America. Sunflower oil, extracted from the seeds, is used for cooking. It is also used to produce margarine and biodiesel, as it is cheaper than olive oil. Sunflowers can also be used to extract toxic ingredients from the soil.

The garden Balsam or “Touch-Me-Not” is a species native to India, Burma, and Bangladesh. Its parts are used as remedies for various diseases and skin infections. The leaf’s juice is used to treat warts and snakebite, and the flower is applied to burns.  The flowers are maybe pink, red or white, in addition to other colors. It is also used to treat rheumatism.
